"A Sound System to Remember" 2009-12-31
By Joshua Anderson (Fort Bliss, TX)
Being here in South Korea on deployment I needed a sound system when I first got to Korea. I searched around for a month or so and I went to check out the Korean systems at the Korean stores. I was out-of-luck until I found this one sitting on the shelf at the BX. It was awesome. I heard it and I was like damn this thing sounds great. I've had expensive systems in the past before I joined the military and this one is excellent. It hooks up to my Sony TV, XBOX 360 and I string a long Audio cable to hook up to my mac to listen to music. I can turn the TV and Audio system on with a touch of a button or I can hit the DVD button and it will go right to the XBOX 360 with the sound after I turn the XBOX on of course. The system is life like when I'm playing Modern Warfare 2 and I can hear the people sneaking up on my on multi player mode with this system. The only downfall to this system in my eyes is that you can't adjust the BASS on the Subwoofer?! Come on Sony for me paying almost 400 dollars for this system and me not being able to adjust the Bass is crazy! This system should of came with that feature. Other then that you can have 8 sources plugged into this thing at once and have HDMI which is awesome. You can control the TV with the remote if you have a Sony TV and control your DVD or Blu-Ray player with the remote too. Overall a great system for someone looking for a easy to use sound system.

"Good sound for the price" 2009-11-26
By John D. Steere (Silver Spring, MD United States)
I spent a long time shopping for a home theater system. I'm glad I followed the advice of other reviewers and chose this item. I have a small room with a big TV, and this provides just the right kind of sound. Works especially well with my PS3, and it was a breeze to hook up.

 "Warranty is Useless" 2009-11-18
By Bob (Ohio)
I've owned this unit for a little less than a year. I began having distortion problems with the subwoofer about a month ago. I hooked up a neighbor's subwoofer to the system and it worked fine. I contacted Sony and learned the product had to be shipped to Texas at my expense for warranty repairs. I boxed up the subwoofer, attached a note explaining the problem including that another subwoofer worked fine, and shipped it to Texas. A week later I get it back with a note reading, "Sony Needs the Complete Unit" taped to the subwoofer. No one even bothered to read the note I had sent. It's apparent Sony wants to discourage warranty repairs by not making repair facilities available nationwide. I've owned a lot of Sony products in the past. I won't be buying Sony anymore.

 "My Only Complaint Is..." 2009-11-16
By Joseph Stampfl (New York)
... that it "only" has HDMI inputs. I know I should have caught this when researching the item (clearly shown in the image of the back of the unit), but I didn't. It's odd to me that even though HDMI is the ideal setup (at the moment) that the unit doesn't have at least a few regular RCA inputs. There are so many things out there that are still viable components that don't have HDMI built in. Other than that, we really like our setup. We have a 42" commercial grade Panasonic Plasma and this stereo in a 8ft X 11ft TV room. I have yet to get into the fine tuning, but I do wish the vocals in the center channel were louder. My wife and I must be hard of hearing because most of the time we can't understand what they are saying - we've tried all the different preset settings. The explosions we hear just fine ;-)

"The best $300 I have ever spent!!" 2009-11-06
By Christopher C. Jones
I spent about six months researching sound systems. I stumbled upon this one pretty early on and never found another system that could compete with it. Now I've had the system for about a year. In that time I've played hours of PS3 on it, watched about 200 movies (about have bluray half DVD) and I am absolutely convinced that it is the best $300 that I have ever spent.

Features- There plenty of systems out there that cost $1000 and don't have the features this unit does. The auto tune works very well, but I manually tune the system depending on the movie and where everyone in the room is sitting. The HDMI input are a HUGE advantage with this system. When I was doing my research no other system in this price range offered the HDMI capabilities of this unit. The 3 HDMI in and one out, makes this super easy to hook up to all your devices. I have my PS3, 360, and satellite/DVR going into the receiver. The HDMI out goes into my TV (KDS-R60XBR1). I have the PS3 bluray set to output the sound in bitstream, and this allows the ss 2300 to decode the sound rather than the PS3. All you have to do is set the unit on auto and it will decode whatever sound format you give it. The color coded wires were nice. The FM/AM tuner is awesome.

Sound quality- is awesome! After I installed the ss 2300 I was watching some football and listening to the commentators talk. I had the TV remote in one hand and the ss 2300 remote in the other. I always thought my TV (KDS-R60XBR1) sound was pretty high quality until I compared the two. After muting the ss 2300 and listening to TV sound, it seemed like the commentators were literally speaking through a pillow, or at least a really thick blanket. With the TV volume muted and all the sound coming from the ss 2300 the commentator voices were crystal clear. It sounded like they were in the room with me. The difference in sound quality is unbelievable.

Loudness- 1000 watts. Need I say more? This thing is loud! The room I have it in is 18 ft long and 24ft wide with a high vaulted ceiling (upstairs gameroom). I like the volume louder than most people and the highest I have ever watched a movie was volume 28 (max is 40). 90% of movies I watch the volume is set between 18 and 24. This system shakes the walls and the floor! At volume 24 you can hear most movies from outside the house. I think my close friend described it best when I asked how he liked the sound system and he said "It was awesome, I could feel it in my chest!"

Appearance- This unit looks 10000000 times better than all the other sound systems I've looked at. The receiver is nice and slim. All the other receivers are huge and ugly. Receivers today look exactly the same as sound receivers from the 80's, except for this one! This receiver looks so futuristic compared to the rest. When I first got it I was worried that since it was so slim and compact (about 1/3 the height of other receivers) it would have problems over heating. I am glad to report there are no heat issues and this receiver. It remains nice and cool even after hours of use. The speakers also look really nice. They are small enough to hide and friends won't notice them, but they are big enough to put out a full range of sound. I love how all the speakers say Sony on them. This looks just like (size and appearance) Sony bluray players! So if you have a Sony set up it will match very nicely. The receiver and speakers are all very high quality and look much better than the competition.

Install- Super easy. 3 HDMI's in, one out. One color coded wire to each speaker. I went to Fry's and got a set of universal wall mounts for all the speakers and it worked very well. Wires are nice and small, easy to hide.

Sub woofer- This is the only part of the SS 2300 that I do not like. The sub woofer is very loud and will shake the walls, but I don't think it provides a very full range of sound. All the sound coming from the sub sounds the same. Its kind of a dull sound. I noticed the sub is a lot lighter (weight) than my previous sub. I don't know much about passive/active. Maybe all passive subs have this problem.

Compared to my other systems- In 1998 I got a top of the line Bose 5.1 system. It was very loud. But very complicated to install, very had to tune, and didn't have many features. In 2005 I got a Sony virtual surround 3.1 system. It was $800. I was very disappointed because no matter what they say 3.1 DOES NOT EQUAL 5.1!!! It did not sound like surround sound at all. The system was very high quality but it was not as immersing as a true 5.1 system. The ss-2300 is easily better than my previous systems. It is a true surround sound and makes you feel like you are in the middle of the action. The sub on my bose and 3.1 was better than the sub on the ss2300, but all the other aspects of the 2300 easily outweigh that one flaw. The ss2300 is also much easier to use than other other 2 systems.

Final Verdict- This system is highest quality available in its price range and beyond. It is very loud even at half volume. It looks much nicer than the competition. It has a huge amount of features. If you are looking for an awesome surround sound to bring together your cable, bluray, and gaming systems, look no further!!
